Statement: I am looking for aspects of fable and parable in contemporary life. Although these literary forms are traditionally associated with moral lessons, I am more drawn to the notion of a modern parable, for example as pursued by Franz Kafka, in which the modern condition is the setting for paradox and aporia. I use a non-literary approach — using found media, found genres, and found processes — to attempt to open up the allegorical space of contemporary human endeavor.
In the allegorical, I am not referring to its archaic, illustrative origins, but rather to its more modern usage treated philosophically by Walter Benjamin, and here elucidated by Craig Owens:
In allegorical structure, then, one text is read through another, however fragmentary, intermittent, or chaotic their relationship may be; the paradigm for the allegorical work is thus the palimpsest. [...] Allegorical imagery is appropriated imagery; the allegorist does not invent images but confiscates them. [...] And in his hands the image becomes something other (allos = other + agoreuei = to speak).
